We’ve stopped in Atlantic Highlands many times as it’s a perfect staging point prior to traveling on the NJ coast south, and a good rest stop on the way north. It’s usually right before or after a very long day, so we’ve never actually gone on land on any of our stops. We learned that Christine’s cousin is part owner of a brewery there and committed to make a longer stop as long as Paul and Chris did the 4 hour drive to meet us. Luckily the timing worked out perfect on this trip as we arrived there just in time for the weekend, had perfect weather and Paul and Chris were both free. We had a great stay at Atlantic Highlands Municipal Marina. Easy walk to town to enjoy the sights and also very convenient by car to see more of the Jersey coast (shore – to the locals).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carton Brewery is an adorable venue with a second floor tasting room that looks and feels like a living room. Great selection of beers, one of the best Bourbon Barrel Porters, Waiting For My Eyes To Adjust, along with their first brewed IPA, Boat were tops on our list. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We visited the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, which is the oldest surviving lighthouse first lit on June 11, 1764. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

During our travels we constantly avoid new or shifting shoals. In understanding what happens to the sand under water, we found this fact about where the lighthouse stands amazing. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We walked around Fort Hancock which is a former United States Army fort at Sandy Hook. The coastal artillery base defended the Atlantic coast and the entrance to New York Harbor. A bright sunny day, we got some steps in and learned some interesting historical facts. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Enjoyed this fabulous brewery with some family ties to my SIL! <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Great selection of beer and one of the best flight holders!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We enjoyed the Jersey coast, it far exceeded our expectations. We drove (YES! in a car, a great treat!) and checked out some areas of nice beaches, boardwalks, and breweries. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
