This section was long and tiring had a bit of indecision and change of plans but also a whole lot of thrilling! We left Hastings at 6:30AM and were lifted 149 feet from 8 locks. The funny part is as the crow flies it was probably only 18 miles but the zigs and zags of the Trent made for a 40 Nautical Mile ride that took 8 and half hours. It was a day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

We set a goal to Go Slow! But the weather the next day was looking like rain and possible thunderstorms with some wind and hail. So, we kept going, enjoying the scenery and locks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaving Hastings, we were cruising in a very narrow river but it quickly opened up into a large lake. Most of Rice Lake is shallow with a rocky bottom but the almost 20 miles was just gorgeous dotted with small islands, birds and lots of coves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were anticipating Lock 21 and it did not disappoint! We arrived at the famous Peterborough Lift Lock and tied up to the gray line to walk up the huge staircase to the top of lock and check it out. This also allowed us to watch Camelot and Lady Z lock through and snap some pictures and videos of them. Standing at the top and thinking “our boat is going to be raised to this height” was kind of scary. Add in, we will be standing on the boat when it is lifted the 65 feet was a little uneasy but exciting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opened in 1904, The Peterborough Lift Lock is the highest lift lock in the world and the first one built in North America. It operates on a balance principle of constant water pressure, gravity and using counterweight, therefore no external power is needed. The lock is really two basins side by side each on a giant hydraulic lift. As one raises 65 feet the other basin lowers. The best part is unlike the other locks, you cleat off your boat and you can walk around (on your boat) and see the process. It was like a Disney ride, a large bath tub being raised 65 feet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
