We squeezed in a little more time at Atlantic Highlands with Chris and Paul as we only had a short ride into New York City. Another great weather day for cruising. We had a strong following current for the whole trip and although this is one of the busiest harbors we go thru, the commercial traffic wasn’t too bad and it was a pleasurable ride past Lady Liberty and lower Manhattan.
While we’ve had many ‘firsts’ on this trip, this one was quite significant to us. This is the first time passing NYC on the west side, and consequently driving away from home. This is really the start of a whole new part of the loop and one that has us getting further and further from home as we go.
The west side of Manhattan was neat to see from the Hudson. Lots of unique architecture and a bustling waterfront as it was a perfect sunny Saturday for the residents to enjoy the waterside. We took a mooring ball at Dyckman Marina and went ashore to explore this area of the city. Certainly a stark change from the sleepy little towns along the ICW; The marina is a few steps from a bustling neighborhood with folks and businesses everywhere you turned. We enjoyed some beers and an app at a streetside restaurant while we took in the sights and people watched.
