It was a quick jump crossing state lines from Fernandina Beach, FL over to St. Mary’s, GA. Generally, we skip Georgia and cruise the ocean to move a bit faster. This year, we are going to slow it down and explore the Georgian spots we have missed.

St. Mary’s, Georgia was settled in the 16th century as a part of Spanish Florida and became part of Georgia in 1763. The small main street is filled with cute, quaint, trendy shops. We enjoyed breakfast in the local coffee shop and then walked to explore the visitor’s center and various museums.
First museum up was the St. Mary’s Submarine Museum. This small two story building is dedicated to preserving the distinguished history of the Submarine Force. History, photos, plaques, models, a firsthand a working periscope, models of torpedoes are on display. Tracy got a great lesson how a periscope works and Bob enjoyed reliving some projects from his career.

St. Mary’s is the gateway to Cumberland Island and they house the visitor center and museum the Island. Exploring the two we learned the history of the island and obtained some travel tips for exploring Cumberland Island.

We ventured out of downtown a bit for a two mile walk to the closest brewery. Umm, a bit unsure the steps were worth the visit when we saw the outside of Brackish Beer Company. Leery we might be joining a family in their living room we stepped in the front door. The inside was dark was a very cool vibe and surprising quite a few folks sitting around enjoying some beer. In the end, lots of steps, friendly folks and good beer!
