When investigating things to do in the area we realized we missed a hike and stalactite cave on the cay just south of where we were anchored. Since our next destination was only 9 miles north (1 hour 15 minutes), we decided to back track in order to explore the cave. We did not in any way regret the decision!
We left Black Point around 7 AM with Nauti Life and dropped the anchor at Oven Rock. We spent three hours on Great Guana Cay before picking up the anchor and cruising to Staniel Cay.
What an amazing spot! We beached the dinghy and took the 15 minute hike through the woods. We carefully looked for signs: stacked rocks, blue line in the vines, driftwood laid in the sand helping us stay on the trail. Once the opening to the cave was found, we hiked down into the cave and ventured into the darkness. The cave was covered with stalactites and stalagmites. An interesting feature is that you can see the mineral-rich water dripping from the ceiling and the growth continuing. We were amazing how smooth the rocks were that were forming from the drips. We walked into the cave and although it was dark, with a flashlight, we saw it contained two large clear pools of water. We sent Bob out into the darkness to investigate. We had to swim through some spots and found some higher ground near the second pool. At this spot, we were able to jump into the pool. Definitely a very cool experience!
